Clinical Depression Symptom and Sign of Depression Checklist

Recognizing the sign and symptom of clinical depression is the first step to getting help. Yet, because depression and Attention Deficit share a number of symptoms, identifying the presence of depression might be difficult. Instead of recognizing the depression symptom as a sign of depression, the person might pass the depression symptom off as an Attention Deficit symptom.

Compounding that problem is that ADHD medications commonly used in ADHD treatment sometimes cause side effects that mimic clinical depression symptoms. These medications can also increase clinical depression and bipolar disorder symptoms.

Read through the clinical depression symptom checklist, keeping in mind that some of the depression symptoms can be from Attention Deficit. Most people with clinical depression will not have every sign or symptom of depression but having five or six symptoms from the depression sign and symptom checklist indicates a likelihood that you are experiencing clinical depression.

Since about 30 percent of people with Attention Deficit will also have depression, many experts recommend that all people diagnosed as ADD should also have a thorough psychological evaluation to determine if depression exists.

Clinical Depression Sign and Symptom Checklist:

  • A persistent sadness, anxiousness or "empty" mood.

  • Changes in sleep patterns (sleeping too little or too much).

  • Changes in eating patterns (reduced appetite and weight loss or increased appetite and weight gain).

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that you once enjoyed.

  • Restlessness or irritability.

  • Persistent physical symptoms (such as headaches, chronic pain, or digestive disorders) that don't respond to treatment.

  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions.

  • Fatigue or lack of energy.

  • Feelings of guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness.

  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

It is important to note the difference between clinical depression and sadness. Every person experiences sadness in response to painful circumstances. It’s an unavoidable part of life. Depression is much more powerful than a period of unhappiness. The dark mood of depression lasts for months, and even years, instead of days or weeks. The person experiencing the depression symptom cannot find a logical reason for the depression and may feel overwhelmed and hopeless. To better detect the presence of depression on your life, take this free depression test.

Depression may manifest itself in different ways. Your house may become a mess, with unfinished jobs everywhere. You might find that it takes days to complete chores that once took only a few hours and you begin to put chores off. You might avoid friends, family and social situations. You may stop caring about what you look like and let personal hygiene slip. You might start living in sweat pants, dumpy clothes or wear mostly dark clothing. You might start drinking or using drugs to escape the pain. As you can see, many of these day-to-day sign indicators of depression are also indications of Attention Deficit.

Depression requires treatment, though that treatment does not have to mean the use of antidepressant prescription medications. There are safe and effective treatments for depression. Deprex, a natural antidepressant, is highly effective and safe.

Although we believe ADHD and depression medication treatment have their places, we also know that this treatment protocol can sometimes cause more trouble than the original conditions. It is important that people know the facts and statistics of depression when determining their course of treatment.
