Depression and the Man.

Men often feel they have to be strong. In order to hide their `weakness,' a man will often be in denial about experiencing a male depression problem. Still, it’s not uncommon for a man to suffer with depression. Male depression has severe consequences with men committing the majority of all suicides in the United States. A man dealing with depression may feel ashamed of feeling vulnerable and emotional. A man combating male depression might work constantly to try to overcome the feelings of depression.

A woman is twice as likely as a man to receive help for depression but male depression may be just as common as female depression. While a woman will seek help, a man will more often attempt to take care of his own problems. A man who is suffering with male depression is less likely to want to talk about his feelings so he will self-medicate with drugs or alcohol. Symptoms of male depression may manifest as a man acts out through sexual exploitation of women, drug and alcohol abuse, violence and even domestic abuse.

Since work and sex are fundamental to the self-esteem of a man, it’s not surprising to find one in seven men develop male depression within a few months of losing their jobs. Men with erectile dysfunction also are more likely to experience male depression because sexuality part of what defines a man.

A man who has recently been divorced may suffer with male depression because marriage is the most significant relationship in the life of a man. A man may feel depression as he wonders whether he will lose his house and children as well as spouse to another man. In fact, experts say a strained marriage is the most common problem associated with man depression. A man who is divorced is at higher risk for suicide because male depression is so severe for men dealing with the stress of separation.

If you have a man in your life who is struggling with depression, it’s important to seek help because the male suicide rate at midlife is three times higher. The risk of a man committing suicide is even greater if he is over the age 65.

When a man is suffering with depression he may still want to have sex but he won’t feel satisfied because he does not feel as good about his body. A man may even show more interest in sex as a way to try to get rid of man depression. However, a man taking an anti-depressant medication may experience a reduced libido which exacerbates male depression.

In terms of a man’s second most important pastime -- career -- male depression is linked to career satisfaction and goals. A man is more likely to experience male depression if he does not have a career goal and does not know what the future will bring. Men in the workplace need feedback from their bosses. A man may experience depression if he does not think his colleagues or boss respects him.

Finally, a man may deal with male depression as he experiences what some experts call male menopause or a midlife crisis. A man may have male depression when he hits age 35. A man with male depression during a midlife crisis will be bored and discontent with a life that used to bring him happiness. A man between the ages of 35 and 50 may want to start new projects and could question the meaning of his life and his identity.

When it comes to helping your man with depression or going through a midlife crisis, try the following tips:

  • Don’t nag him about going to a psychologist. He probably won’t want to go especially if he is in denial about his male depression.
  • Don't blame yourself for his male depression and problems coming to term with growing older.
  • Be patient and non-judgmental about his man depression. A man needs to know you will care and trust him to solve his own problems.
  • Give him space and time. Don’t be clingy or follow him around like a shadow. Don’t give your man the third degree for spending time with friends or family. He needs social interaction to help overcome his male depression.
  • Compliment and praise him. A man needs to feel sexy and desirable. Male depression and insecurity about sexual performance is linked. Show him you enjoy being with him and value his role as a man.
