Depression Support Group Information

People who have never suffered from depression simply cannot understand its depths. It’s no surprise that people with depression feel isolated and disconnected from the non-depressed world.

Finding and participating in a depression support group - whether online or in person - can provide a depth of help and advice that you might not find anywhere else. A depression support group puts you face to face (or keyboard to keyboard) with people who share many of the same symptoms and feelings as you do.

There are many benefits to participating in a depression support group.
A depression support group puts you in touch with people who understand what you're going through. Family and friends can empathize with your depression but if they haven't personally experienced depression, they cannot fully understand what you are going through. You may feel freer to speak your mind and voice your frustrations, disappointments and anger with people who understand.

A depression support group can provide a sense of belonging. There is a special bond among people who share a common experience. Once you have the experience of being accepted just as you are by people who understand you, you begin to feel more accepting toward yourself.

A depression support group can also provide for solid exchange of advice. Well-meaning friends cannot provide the depth of advise as someone speaking with the voice of firsthand experience.

However, not all depression support groups are beneficial. Some groups can become a place to vent and share only negative feelings if not carefully monitored. This setting can leave you even more depressed. Look for a depression support group where the mood is upbeat and the message positive to gain the best benefit.

You must also be willing to share thoughts and feelings, and be willing to help others to gain benefit from a depression support group. People who do not want to talk are less likely to benefit from a depression support group.

Your community may already have a depression support group. To find out if there's a depression support group in your community, check with your doctor, a local counselor, your county health department or a community health organization.

Many people prefer the convenience and anonymous nature of an online depression chat room or depression message boards. Review an extensive list online depression support groups and message boards to find one that best suits your needs.

Remember that most of these depression support groups are not run by trained professionals. Please seek professional help if you are in a crisis or are in danger of harming yourself.
