Lavandula (Lavender).

Lavandula, lavender, is recognized around the world for its fresh, heady fragrance. The lavender plant, which is a flowering evergreen shrub, is native to the Mediterranean region. The lavender plant also boasts a long history in herbal healing. Historically, this herb had been found to soothe and calm the nerves, relieving stress and feelings of anxiousness when taken internally. The Romans scented their baths with lavender plant, the Tibetans still make an edible butter out of lavandula to use as part of a treatment for nervous disorders, and today the oil of lavender plant is widely used across Europe for ills from anxiety to sunburn.

In the past several decades, researchers have been studying the lavender plant and its extracts with exciting results. One extract is being studied for the prevention and treatment of various cancers including breast, ovarian, pancreatic, liver, and prostate. Other reports have shown that parts of the lavender plant may help lower both cholesterol and blood sugar levels. A 1998 clinical trial in Scotland indicated that lavandula oil might slow hair loss. Also, lavender tea is popular in many parts of Europe for treating loss of appetite, stomach upset, and intestinal gas pain.

The aromatic lavandula flower has natural antiseptic and astringent properties that can treat sunburn and minor cuts and scrapes. In Germany, a tea made from dried lavandula flowers is an officially recognized remedy for restlessness and difficulty sleeping. Finally, lavender products also relieves tension and lifts mild depression. In aromatherapy, the distilled essential oil of lavender is widely recommended as a remedy for depressed mood, fatigue, stress, nervous tension, and anxiety.
