Linolenic Acid.

Linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid and a major omega-3 fatty acid found in food. Compounds made from linolenic acid have been shown to decrease blood clotting and decrease inflammatory processes in the body. Linolenic acid can increase metabolic rate, decrease abdominal fat, enhance muscle growth, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, lower insulin resistance, reduce food-induced allergic reactions, and enhances the immune system.  Linolenic acid is also found to benefit heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression, and ADHD. Signs of linolenic acid deficiency include loss of motor coordination, tingling in the extremities, vision impairment, and behavioral changes. Linolenic acid is found primarily in fish, beef and dairy fats and it is highly concentrated in certain plant oils such as flaxseed, canola, soy, perilla, and walnut.

Conjugated linolenic acid (CLA) is a slightly altered form of linolenic acid  (LA). Recently CLA has become available in concentrated dietary supplements. Claims of this supplement include that it helps burn fat, builds muscle, and fights cancer.

Essential fatty acids govern growth, vitality and mental state. The brain is 60 percent fat and needs essential fatty acids to function properly. Essential fatty acids are critical for good physical health, mental health, concentration and memory. Because the body does not make essential fatty acids, they are only available through our diets or through supplementation.

Although the body needs both Omega 3 and Omega-6 fatty acids to thrive, the typical Western diet provides ample amounts of the Omega 6 fatty acids. When discussing the benefits of fatty acids, most experts focus on the Omega 3 fatty acids since these are most often found lacking in the American diet.

Research consistently links mood disorders to low concentrations of Omega 3 fatty acids in the body. Omega 3 fatty acids keep the brain's traffic pattern of thoughts, reactions, and reflexes running smoothly and efficiently. Numerous studies show that children with the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder have lower levels of essential fatty acids. Studies also show that lower levels of essential fatty acids can result in problems with learning, behavior, temper, sleep, and immune function.

Omega 3 fatty acids are shown to be good for the heart and can lower the death rate from heart attacks. These fatty acids also act as an anti-inflammatory, can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and reduce blood pressure.

Scientific research also shows that Omega 3 fatty acids can also reduce the symptoms and risks of diabetes, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, some cancers, and mental decline. Omega 3 fatty acids can improve mild to moderate depression and symptoms of other mental health problems like bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

A diet rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acids can reduce hypertension and improve the symptoms of lupus, Raynaud's disease, and other autoimmune diseases.

Fatty, cold-water fish, including salmon, herring, sardines, halibut, bluefish, tuna, cod, flounder, trout, shrimp and mackerel are all excellent sources of Omega 3 fatty acids. Canola oil, flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts, and leafy green vegetables all good sources of plant-based Omega 3 fatty acids.
