Valerian (Valeriana Officinalis), is an herb that is well known for
its ability to soothe and calm the nerves. Valerian root is also used to induce sleep. Traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine
recommends valerian root for the treatment of insomnia. When combined with St. John’s
Wort or lemon balm, many studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of the herb as a sleep aid. And unlike pharmaceutical sleep aids, valerian won’t cause
feelings of grogginess after waking or lead to a chemical dependency.
The sedating effect of
valerian on the central nervous system may help reduce muscle
spasms and prevent convulsions. Recent animal studies suggest
that it may also help lower blood pressure and inhibit tumor
growth. The Canadian Indians, the Iroquois, reportedly used
valerian root as a wound cleaner. Valerian returned to popularity medicinally
during the First World War. Valerian was used to treat shell shock and nervous stress
in the army hospitals. Still effective when taken internally, the valerian root
acts to soothe a person’s stress, relieve sleeplessness, calming the body and
emotional distress, tiredness, and exhaustion.
