I am going to assume you are a "starving college student" and give you the best low-dough advice I know.
But before that, I do need to voice my concerns about Strattera. Our stance is that until Strattera has been around for a while (longer than just a few months) and has been tested on more than the small sampling used for FDA approval, people should take a wait and see approach. Go to our archive newsletters section (link found at the bottom of the home page at http://add-adhd-help-center.com) to read an article about Strattera.
Okay - on to some simple measures that can and should help with Attention Deficit Disorder issues. Diet is incredibly important for Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms. The most critical nutritional aspects you want to include into your diet are amino acids and essential fatty acids so you want to move toward a quality protein based diet (quality protein does NOT include Whoppers and Big Macs!). My top two daily diet suggestions are;
_ Drinking a protein shake every morning to get the brain moving. _ Take a tablespoon of flax seed oil daily, mixed with a cold protein like cottage cheese, yogurt or your protein shake. We found that mixing with yogurt disguises the oil best but if you can handle it, cottage cheese is the best medium. Flax seed oil, in our opinion, is "Food of the gods" and helps not only with brain functioning but has properties that can also reduce your chances of cancer and heart disease.
We recommend these two tips to all of our clients dealing with Attention Deficit Disorder, whether they take Attend, ADHD medications, both or nothing at all.
Other suggestions include;
_ Eggs, toast with peanut butter, yogurt, etc... in the morning along with the protein shake. _ Get in the habit of eating tuna (mixed with a tablespoon of flax seed oil is even better) to get more protein in the body. _ Salmon is a fantastic source of essential fatty accids and amino acids, as are other cold water fish. _ Vegetarians can get their complete proteins by eating beans with rice. _ Of course, we also recommend Attend (if your "starving college student" budget can afford) since its formula contains over 70 ingredients specifically targeted to neurological functioning.
Attend has the same level of effectiveness as your ADHD medications Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Strattera...
Our next newsletter, due out March 15, will address the diet issue in more depth than this forum. If you are interested, sign up for the free newsletter at info@add-adhd-help-center.com to receive this newsletter. Or, check the Attention Deficit Disorder Help Center's archived newsletters page after March 15 to read the article from the web site.
As a personal aside, I can understand your frustrations of being an A student struggling to get Cs in college. This ADHD gal slept through high school honors classes and still maintained honor roll standing. My freshmen year at college found me on academic probation. Oops! Learning to improving study habits (there's plenty of info on the Net) will help.
When not studying, nurture your daydreaming. Daydreamers change the world when they fully develop that wonderful skill. Our world is a better place because of daydreamers like Thomas Edison, Beethoven, Alexander Graham Bell, Albert Einstein, Galileo, Leonardo da Vinci and a host of other famous people that displayed Attention Deficit Disorder symptoms.
One of my all-time favorite books is "The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity" by Julia Cameron. It's awesome.
Good luck and great blessings - Jeannine
