When looking at natural remedies ADHD options, diet is one of the first methods to be explored. There is strong evidence that food additives can cause ADHD behavior. Food colorings and dyes are used to make foods look for attractive and inviting to eat and can be found in almost all types of food. Most all processed foods - from macaroni and cheese, to cereals, to chocolates, to cheese, and to candies - have at least one food colorings added to it. These artificial food colorings have been thought to cause symptoms of ADHD. Food colorings such as Green # 3, Yellow # 6, Yellow #5, Red # 40, Red # 3, Blue # 2, and Blue # 1 are the artificial food colorings that are most linked to the symptoms of ADHD. Among all of these artificial food colorings that are linked to ADHD, Yellow # 5 has been found to be the worst offender. Removing foods with additives from the diet can be one of the effective ADHD remedies.

According to one study, rats fed with foods that contained yellow # 5 were more prone to hyperactivity. Researchers theorize that it can also contribute to the intensity of hyperactivity in people with ADHD. Another study connected yellow # 5 to ADHD when researchers found that this dye affects nerve cells and causes people to not be able to think clearly, learn well, remember things and reason.

Artificial food colorings contain arsenic, benzidine, lead and mercury, which are all hazardous to health. Mercury and lead can both affect mental development and arsenic can lead to confusion and headache, and place a person at a higher risk of developing certain cancers.

ADHD people may be more prone to a deficiency in zinc when they consume food colorings, because they tend to lose zinc faster than those who do not have ADHD. When a deficiency in zinc is developed, the body and mind’s function may be affected. Zinc is also essential in promoting natural wound healing, blood clotting, taste and smell and is needed for thyroid, brain, and immune system functions.

There is a relationship between ADHD and nutrition so when looking at ADD natural remedies, diet should take the forefront. If we can just be careful about the food we eat, it can change our lives dramatically.
