The Food Additives ADHD Connection

March 18th, 2010

A growing number of researchers state certain foods and food dyes can be at fault for the increasing amount of ADHD difficulties. Here are two studies conducted within the past few years that make a food additives ADHD connection;

A 2007 study tested the effects of artificial food colorings on hyperactivity. Scientists at the University of Southampton tested almost 300 children over a 6-week period by supplying one group with drinks containing artificial dyes. The second group received drinks without artificial dyes. Based on teacher and parent assessments, researchers determined that children who drank the mixes with artificial colorings were substantially more hyperactive and had shorter attention spans.

In a 2009 study from the Netherland, researchers at the ADHD Research Centre looked at the benefit of taking certain foods out of the diet. Researchers found that a strict elimination diet produced a 50 to 70 percent reduction in symptoms after 9 weeks on the diet program.

Doing away with artificial additives and preservative, and other generally unhealthy foods from the diet is the kindest and healthiest way to treat Attention Deficit Disorder. By simply changing the diet, you deliver a foundation for solid nutrition and may very well be able to avoid using stimulant ADHD medications.
